Let’s design something meaningful together.
-
I live, breathe, and dream all-things-garden. I launched A Mum Who Gardens as my way of helping others create the garden spaces of their dreams, in hopes that they, too, will catch the gardening bug.
I live in Howard County, Maryland - an incredible community between DC and Baltimore - where I’m surrounded by beauty that inspires me daily and carries forward into my garden designs.
-
I believe in keeping things simple, streamlined, and focused on you.
Every project starts with a free 15 minute consultation during which I’ll:
Ask lots of questions about you, your lifestyle, and your garden goals
Help you understand my garden design packages with varying levels support
Give you my honest thoughts on whether I think we’ll be a good fit for each other
My process ends with something we're both proud to share.
-
I offer virtual design services so I can connect and support as many current and soon-to-be gardeners as possible.
For neighbors (i.e., those living in Howard County, Maryland), I’m able to offer partial and full, detailed landscape plans that require a site visit as part of the process.
My free initial consultation includes a chance for us to get to know each other and decide whether we’d make a good team.
Whatever you're envisioning for your garden, I’m here to help you take the first design steps with confidence.
About Me
I’m Jess, the proud owner of A Mum Who Gardens and - you guessed it - a mum and avid gardener.
The garden is my refuge, my place to recharge, my place to think about everything, and my place to think about nothing. For me, gardening has been restorative - recharging to my soul. Watching my little ones observe changes in the garden throughout the season, study the leaves, or search for worms in the soil? It fills my heart and reminds me that deep appreciation for the garden is contagious.
I want others to catch the gardening bug and derive the same joy and energy from gardening as I have. Hence why I founded A Mum Who Gardens.
My philosophy is that gardens need to do more than look pretty… Gardens should reflect the people who tend them, spark wonder and appreciation for nature, and allow the gardener’s creativity to flourish.
I’m excited to get to know you, too, as we work together on designing your garden.

Your Questions, Answered
-
I don’t work like other garden and landscape companies that are light on design and big on large, expensive hardscaping installations using the same manufactured materials on repeat.
Instead, I:
Help you create a garden design that “feels like you”
Encourage you to work in bite-sized project phases
Offer design packages tailored to only the amount of support you want and need (I’ve got you, fellow DIYers!)
-
I offer several garden design packages tailored to the level of support you want.
If you don’t see a design package that fits your specific needs, let’s talk about it during our 15 minute initial consultation. No two gardens are alike, after all.
NOTE: Only rarely do I complete the planting installation myself. That said, I’m always happy to refer clients to people I’d trust to plant in my own garden.
-
You’ll experience my collaborative nature as well as my honesty and straightforwardness. I pride myself on always giving people I care about my candid input.
-
Emphatic yes. I consider and prioritize sustainability in all of my recommendations to others and in my own gardening decisions. This includes weighing specific plant selections, hardscape materials, irrigation needs, and products used to treat pests and disease.
-
Yes! While I’m not an absolutist on native plantings, I use as many as I can in my own garden and strongly recommend that others lean on them too. That said, we will walk through some important nuances when we work together. For example, people define “natives” in vastly different ways, and some natives are actually rather aggressive and probably not ideal for residential landscapes. (Think: Virginia Creeper.) I’ll help you weigh the pros and cons of various plant selections with eco-friendliness front of mind.
-
Yes. I’m a firm believer that if keeping your garden going requires constant supplemental watering, you’ve chosen the wrong plants, the wrong planting sites, or both.
I design gardens that, once established, can hold their own through periods of heat and drought. That is, after all, what we deal with in the Mid-Atlantic region and in many other parts of the country.
-
I will gladly make referrals to other creators, artisans, and small business owners like me. I always do my best to support small businesses.
-
I consciously choose not to use AI to generate my designs. And I’m confident you’ll be happy that I don’t when you see my deliverables. The design will reflect you and how you interact with your space.
My landscape plans sometimes use 2D or 3D tools to help me translate the ideas we’ve discussed into a visualized format.
At A Mum Who Gardens, technology facilitates projects. but it’s you and I working together that generates the best designs.
-
For my own garden, yes. But gardens are deeply personal spaces, and I can appreciate the beauty of multiple styles.
That said, there are some aesthetic commonalities that you’ll see across most of my design plans:
Strong preference for natural materials over manufactured ones. Think stacked flagstone instead of interlocking blocks and cedar wood fencing instead of white vinyl.
A healthy mixture of structure and wildness in plantings.
Mixed borders and hedges. Think a combination of beautiful evergreens of varying heights and hues instead of a wall of green giant arborvitae.
Garden zones or garden rooms. I’m always driving toward the garden being an experience and creating a sense of mystery or having an element of surprise.
There’s always beauty in helping others create the garden that reflects them.
